47 到了晚上,船在海中,耶稣独自在岸上;

49 但门徒看见他在海面上走,以为是鬼怪,就喊叫起来;

Scripture: Mark 6:45-52

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. 47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.

Introduction:

  • Food is like God to people. (idiom); People view food as the primary need. However, Jesus said according to the Bible, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

  • As mentioned in the scripture, when Jesus saw a large group of people, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, so Jesus began to teach them many things.

  • This is the heart of a shepherd, feed the sheep; eat spiritual food first.

  • The apostles did not have the heart of a shepherd; people looked for Jesus because they saw a miracle. After five loaves and two fish miracle, they were full because of the loaves of bread.

  • The disciples need to continue training. Jesus immediately urged the disciples to get on the boat and dispersed the crowd.

  • No contact information was left by the multitudes. Jesus wanted to call on the Heavenly Father: He goes up to the mountain and prays.

Focus Points:

A. The food of Jesus is to do the will of the one who sent him and to accomplish his work (discipleship training) (v45-47)

1. Get close to God alone in order to do God’s will.

· Early morning: Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” (Mark 1:35)

· Important things: “12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:” (Luke 6:12-13)

2. Alone, but with God . Help us learn to trust God

· “You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.” (John 16:32b)

· 16 …. but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. 17But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength,...”(2 Timothy 4:16b-17a])

· Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered” (Hebrews 5:8)

B. Christian's life is as walking on the sea, it is inevitable that we labor, panic, and fear (v48-50)

  • Peter was walking on the water, but when he saw the wind was strong, he was afraid. About to sink, he shouted, "Lord, save me." (Matthew 14:28-33)

  • fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” ( Hebrews 12:2a)

  • “Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 John 5:5)

C. How to stop being foolish (v51-52)

1. Know who Jesus is, even wind and sea obeyed him.

2. Chronic Problem

  • "My people are fools; they do not know me.” (Jeramiah 4:22a)

  • " Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: ‘Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?? " (Mark 8:17)

3. Salvation for Generations

  • “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. “ (John 6:56)

  • “and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” (Colossians 3:10)

  • If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.” (1 John 4:15)

  • So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (According to truth, not by feeling) (Galatians 5:16b)

  • “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” (3 John 1:4)

Conclusion:

  • The “dividing of the bread”, Jesus walked on the sea and calmed the wind and waves, showing that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God. If we believe in him, we can have life in his name.

  • New life, new living, food, clothing, housing and transportation have all transformed.

Discussion and Sharing:

  1. Why did Jesus go to the mountain alone to pray?

  2. When Jesus got on the boat, the wind stopped; why did the disciples feel so surprised?

  3. Do you understand the dividing of loafs of bread (v52)
