Scripture: [John 13: 1-20]

Jesus washed the feet of his disciples as an example

13 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” 8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” 9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” 10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not everyone was clean.12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’ 19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”

Preface:

  • Someone made a summary of the deacons of the church: partial hearing, prejudice, partiality, bigotry. I regard him as a deacon serving the four sides.

  • The meaning of a deacon is a servant, a servant of God, and a servant of the church. In the early Chinese church, this word was translated as "conference servant." As a servant, the most important thing is to know the master's will and not deviate from it. Therefore, service that does not deviate from the Lord's will is rewarded.

A. The meaning of washing your feet: connecting with the Lord (knowing who you are) [V1-11]

1. People cannot find their identity by themselves

· Since the fall of the ancestors' sins, people don't know their true identity, and they don't know who they are.

· However, when death comes, people know that the simplest and most essential difference between people is the difference between the dead and the living.

2. Jesus Christ gave us a new identity

· First, Jesus Christ knows who he is. [V3]

· Second, Jesus Christ gave the disciples a new identity. [V4-5]

· The detailed description of the Lord's washing of feet hides many reflections of the great love of the incarnate Lord, and the service revealed from this love.

- Leaving the table (John 13:4): It signifies that the Lord disregarded his own identity and position, left the glorious throne in heaven, came into the world as a man, and engaged in the work of redemption (Philippians 2:6).

- Take off the cloak (John 13:4): It signifies that the Lord has given up the honorable status of the true God of glory and was born as a humble man to serve people (Philippians 2:7).

- Girdle with a towel (John 13:4): It signifies that the Lord has taken the form of a slave, like a servant, obedient to God (Philippians 2:8).

- Pour water into the basin (John 13:5): It signifies that the Lord Jesus “will use water to cleanse the church (group of believers) so it becomes holy through the Word (truth).” (Ephesians 5:26, 27; John 17:17).

- Wipe dry (John 13:5): It means that since the Lord forgives people, he will no longer count people's evils without leaving any traces, and forgiveness is complete (Matthew 18 21, 22).

· We are part of God's kingdom and partake in eternal life, all because we belong to Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ served us.

B. Items for feet washing: The Lord washes the feet of the disciples, and the disciples should wash each other's feet (knowing what to do)

1. Foot washing history

· Foot washing was a rule of Jewish hospitality in ancient times, and later it became a courtesy (see Luke 7:44) and virtue (1 Timothy 5:10).

· It is anti-traditional for Jesus to wash his disciples' feet. Because by tradition, the servant washes the feet of the guests and the servant washes the feet of the master. However, as the Lord, Jesus washed the feet of the disciples, and he commanded the disciples to wash each other's feet. The big one serves the small, and the master serves the servant. This is the law of service in the kingdom of heaven and the law of the gospel!

2. After the feet are washed [V12-14]

Leaders in the world serve themselves, while leaders in the church serve others. Serve people like yourself.

C. How to wash your feet: (know how to do it? Action, willingness, emotion)

· Jesus knows..." Jesus is the Lord who knows everything. Jesus knows that his disciples will betray him.

· The love of Jesus Christ has never changed because of different people. He is the essence of love, he is love, and he lives out his divinity. He shows the love of God!

· Only those who have been served by the Lord are qualified to serve others. The qualifications for serving in the church are that only those who have been served by God can serve others!

· Serve in the way of the Lord. There are three aspects: a willing heart, a humble heart, and real actions.

· Remember what the Lord himself said: 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Conclusion: Love people to the end

· " For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,." (Romans 3:23)

· Jesus loves us the unworthy, us sinners, us who betrayed him, us selfish people, and he sacrifices himself for the unworthy!

· However, his love is not spoiling, his love is the love of change. His love changes mortal life and gives heavenly life. And this new life, this person who has received the life of Christ, loves others with the same mind, and loves them to the end.

· What kind of person do you love? Love all those who hurt you, love those who betray you, and love them to the end. Such disciples are true disciples of Jesus Christ. Such deacons are the deacons of the Church of Jesus Christ. Such deacons are the deacons expected by the Christian church.

· May you be good deacons of Jesus Christ!
